What
Can I Do?
(THE INJURIES
ARE NOT YOUR FAULT!)
Your next logical
question is "What can I do to help prevent these terrible
accidents and especially the traumatic injuries to children?"
That's right, you. The answer is "You can do a lot."
Let me give you a partial list and then you can think of more.
- If you have
been affected personally by a riding lawnmower back over accident
or know of someone who has, send the requested information in
this website by Contacting
Us or mail it to Riding Lawnmower Safety, 571 CR 1430,
Center, Texas 75935 or telephone us toll free at 1.866.282.8855.
- You can furnish
us with important information to help us get the Consumer Product
Safety Commission (CPSC) adopt a mandatory standard requiring
manufacture of riding lawnmowers that cannot be put in reverse
while the blades are engaged and spinning. Click
here for how you can help. We need this information.
- You can contact
the lawnmower manufacturers (see Lawnmowers
Manufacturers) and their industry association (visit our
Info Links) and
request or demand action on their part to resolve this horrible
situation.
- You can encourage
your elected officials to legislate solutions to this problem.
A sample elected official letter
is available for your use.
- In certain instances
where an individual has received injuries as a result of a riding
lawnmower back over accident the victim and their family may be
entitled to make a claim against the lawnmower manufacturer, to
help pay for the child's medical care. By sending us the requested
information we can assist you in finding legal representation.
To help prevent
these accidents from occurring please follow the manufacturer's
safety recommendations included in their manuals. Even though you
follow these there will be instances when the accident will occur
in spite of everything you do.
Remember, the solution to preventing catastrophic injuries is a
simple and inexpensive non-mowing
in reverse device (NMIR)
that prevents the blade from rotating when the mower is in reverse.
Some manufacturers in the lawnmower industry will give you many
excuses why they can't do anything, but it's all a smoke screen.
None of their excuses are true. Some of the more commonly used excuses
of the industry are; the public won't accept not being able to mow
in reverse, it's not technically feasible, it's too expensive, there's
not that many accidents happening, etc. It is important to point
out that a few of the more reputable manufacturers have taken responsibility
and voluntarily put NMIR devices
on their riding lawnmowers. We can furnish you with a list
of these.
